Incline barbell bench press

Incline barbell bench press for upper chest strength.

Setup

  • Set incline bench to about 30 to 45 degrees, lie flat, squeeze shoulder blades down and together.

  • Grip bar slightly wider than shoulder-width with an overhand grip.

  • Lift chest, brace core, plant feet firmly on the floor.

  • Unrack bar safely, stabilize over upper chest.

  • Keep wrists straight above elbows.

Execution

  • Lower the bar under control to the upper chest, elbows at about 45° to the body.

  • Reverse direction just before touching the chest, without resting.

  • Push up until arms are almost straight, bar path slightly toward the face.

  • Hold briefly at the top, shoulder blades remain set.

  • Breathing: Exhale when pushing, inhale when lowering.
